Are you applying fertilizer to your crops manually? Certainly, this method works; but it is time-consuming, cumbersome, and honestly, becomes difficult to manage as the farm size increases.
A fertigation machine can completely change this situation for farmers. This machine mixes fertilizer with irrigation water, so that every drop reaching the root zone can deliver the required nutrients in the right quantity and at the right time.
If you are an Indian farmer considering investing in a fertigation system for Indian agriculture, it is natural to have some questions: How exactly does this machine work? What types are available? Is the cost justified compared with conventional fertilizer application methods?
This guide will help you understand practical information beyond sales claims, so that you can make the right decision for yourself.
What Exactly Is a Fertigation Machine or Controller?
A fertigation machine or controller delivers a specific quantity of liquid or completely water-soluble fertilizer into the irrigation water flow.
Instead of spreading fertilizer in the field and expecting every plant to receive an equal share, nutrients are delivered directly into the crop’s root zone through drip or sprinkler irrigation.
What Is the Basic Structure of a Fertigation System?
It generally consists of a fertilizer tank or storage tank, injector or dosing pump, and controller.
The controller can manage irrigation timing, fertilizer quantity, and in some advanced systems, it can also monitor or control water quality parameters such as EC and pH. This combination is known as an automated fertilizer dosing system.
How Fertigation Controllers Work: Manual vs. Automated
To understand how a fertigation controller works, it is important to first understand what work it reduces.
In manual fertigation, the farmer or worker manually mixes fertilizer in a tank and injects it into the irrigation water according to the irrigation schedule and an approximate calculation. This method works; however, ensuring that the fertilizer is mixed in the correct quantity, applied at the right time, and managed properly every time depends on the person carrying out the operation.
Fertigation vs. Conventional Fertilizer Application
| Factor | Manual Fertigation | Automated Fertigation |
| Fertilizer Quantity | Depends on who is mixing the fertilizer and the batch prepared at that time | Accurate dosing that can be repeated consistently every time |
| Labour | Requires more manpower for mixing fertilizer, deciding timing and monitoring the process | Can operate automatically once programmed |
| Nutrient Timing | Based on approximate scheduling | Precisely planned according to irrigation cycles |
| Suitable For | Small areas and limited budgets | Large farms, high-value crops and multiple fields |
| Initial Investment | Lower initial cost | Higher initial cost, but reduces labour costs over time |
There is no single method that is best for everyone. The system should be selected according to the crop type, open-field farming, polyhouse, greenhouse, shed-net farming, and farm size ranging from small areas to 1,000 hectares.
However, the cost of automation, savings in fertilizer use, reduction in labour costs, and improvement in quality production can help recover the investment in an automated fertigation system within a few seasons.
Types of Fertigation Controllers
All controllers are not the same. When comparing fertigation controllers in India, you will mainly come across the following types:
1. Timer-Based Controllers
These are simple and relatively economical. They operate the fertilizer injection process for a predetermined period according to a fixed schedule and repeat it at specified intervals. They are a good starting option for farmers shifting from manual fertigation to an automated system.
2. Volumetric Controllers
These controllers do not rely only on time. They control fertilizer dosing according to the crop’s growth requirements and the quantity of irrigation water required during different crop growth stages. Therefore, even if the water flow changes from day to day, the fertilizer quantity or nutrient concentration can be maintained more consistently.
3. EC/pH-Based Controllers
This is a more advanced option. These controllers measure EC, or electrical conductivity, and pH of the water in real time and can automatically adjust fertilizer dosing to achieve the required target level. With the increase in production possible through this technology, the cost of such systems can be considered relatively small. Accurate nutrient management has a major impact on crop production, quality and profitability.
Role of Fertigation Equipment in Drip Irrigation
A fertigation machine does not operate independently. It is connected to your existing irrigation system and is primarily used with a drip irrigation system.
A typical fertigation equipment arrangement for drip irrigation is as follows:
- Water source and pump
- Filtration system
- Fertigation injector / controller
- Mainline and submain pipeline
- Lateral pipes and drippers
Through this system, water and nutrients are delivered together to the crop root zone.
Government schemes such as PMKSY, or Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, include fertigation equipment such as Venturi injectors or fertilizer tanks in their micro-irrigation guidelines. This clearly shows the close relationship between fertigation and drip irrigation.
Automation Fertigation Machine Price Factors: What to Check Before Buying
1. Farm Size & System Capacity
Select the automation system according to crop type, farm size, number of zones, water flow and fertigation requirement — from small farms to large-scale projects.
2. Level of Automation & Control
Choose between basic timer-based, volumetric, or advanced EC/pH-based automation, depending on the level of precision and control required.
3. Fertilizer Dosing Accuracy
Check the injection capacity, dosing accuracy, calibration facility and number of fertilizer channels to ensure uniform and precise nutrient application.
4. Installation, Service & Future Expansion
Consider installation cost, power requirements, after-sales service, spare parts, technical support and future expansion capacity before finalizing the machine.
For this reason, purchasing a machine from a reliable Indian manufacturer can be beneficial. In case of any difficulty, a dealer network, technical service and calibration support can make the use of the fertigation system easier and more effective.
Common Mistakes in Fertigation
Several mistakes are commonly observed when starting fertigation.
- Ignoring filtration — without proper filtration, fertilizer residues and other impurities can accumulate in the drippers and cause dripper clogging
- Mixing incompatible fertilizers — mixing certain fertilizers can cause chemical reactions and form precipitates, which may create blockages in the irrigation system or drippers; it is essential to check fertilizer compatibility before mixing
- Ignoring calibration — dosing quantity may change over time, so regular calibration is essential to ensure the correct and accurate fertilizer quantity
- Selecting an undersized controller — if you plan to increase the farm area in the future, it is not advisable to select a system that only meets the present requirement; it is important to select a properly sized controller while considering future expansion

Conclusion
A fertigation machine should be selected according to whether the plot is small or large. If your farm area is small or your budget is limited, fertigation machines are available according to your specific requirement.
However, whether it is a small or large farm, sugarcane, orchards, or high-value crops, accurate fertilizer application and labour savings can make investment in a fertigation machine beneficial within a few seasons.
Do not consider price alone when purchasing a machine. Check whether a timer-based, volumetric, or EC/pH-based controller is suitable for your actual requirements. Instead of purchasing a machine that is oversized or undersized for your farm, select the appropriate system based on crop, farm size, water flow and fertilizer management requirements.
