How Drip Irrigation Helped a Solapur Farmer Earn ₹1.09 Lakh Profit from Watermelon Farming

Farmer: Mr. Khandu Koli
Village: Soregaon
Taluka: South Solapur
District: Solapur

In a region where summer watermelon cultivation offers strong market demand and returns within 60–75 days, Mr. Khandu Koli from Soregaon made a strategic decision to plant his crop at the end of December. With 8–9 years of experience in watermelon farming, he understood both the risks and opportunities associated with the crop. This season, however, he adopted a more technology-driven approach — and the results were exceptional.

For this cultivation cycle, Mr. Koli selected products from Kothari Irrigation, specifically the K-Super NON ISI Drip system and Super Melon Mulching. In previous years, he had used locally available low-cost drip systems, where water distribution was inconsistent. Uneven discharge led to irregular crop growth and variation in fruit size and quality.

With K-Super NON ISI Drip, he observed uniform water distribution across the entire field. Each plant received a consistent discharge rate, ensuring balanced vegetative growth and uniform fruit development. According to Mr. Koli, the performance of the system has been highly reliable, and he is confident about its durability and consistent discharge for the next 3–4 years. The product truly lived up to its name — “K-Super.”

The Super Melon Mulching further enhanced crop performance. It effectively eliminated weed growth throughout the season, reduced labor requirements, and maintained optimal soil moisture levels. Most importantly, it created a favorable root-zone environment, allowing better nutrient uptake and healthier plant development.

At harvest, the results were commercially impressive. The watermelons were uniform in size, attractive in appearance, and averaged 6–7 kg per fruit. During the mandi auction, his produce commanded the highest price due to superior quality. Traders visited the farm directly, reflecting strong market confidence in his crop.

Financial Overview (Per Acre)

  • Total Investment: ₹70,400
  • Yield: 15 tons per acre
  • Market Price: ₹12–15 per kg
  • Gross Income: ₹1,80,000
  • Net Profit: ₹1,09,600

Mr. Koli describes this season as the most economically rewarding year of his farming career. The combination of uniform irrigation, high-quality mulching, and disciplined crop management resulted in improved productivity, superior fruit quality, and substantial net profit.

This case demonstrates that cost-effective yet technologically sound irrigation solutions can significantly enhance profitability in short-duration commercial crops like watermelon. Strategic input selection and precision water management are no longer optional — they are essential for sustainable agricultural success.
